In many situations, dental implants can give patients back their confident smile. The benefits of implants include improved aesthetics, the ability to eat comfortably and a clean, healthy oral environment for the patient.
Dental implants are small prosthetic posts that are placed into the bone of the upper or lower jaw. They act as replacements for the root portion of lost natural teeth and also serve as an anchor for replacement teeth such as crowns or bridges. Dental implants look and feel exactly like natural teeth -- in fact, no one (other than maybe our dentists) will be able to tell the difference. Dental implants are appropriate for almost anyone who is currently missing teeth or at risk of losing teeth.
There are many different types of dental implants available. Our dentists at Clock Tower Dental have extensive experience in dental implants and would be pleased to discuss the benefits of implant prosthetics with you. Ask about implant restorative treatment at the time of your consultation.
Implants provide sturdy, long-lasting results by preventing bone loss and gum recession. They do not sacrifice the strength of neighboring teeth like traditional bridges do, and instead preserve your overall tooth health with added strength and reliability. The dentists at Clock Tower Dental have many years of experience placing dental implants and often recommend this treatment above all others.
Dental implants are placed during a series of appointments over several months. During the first procedure, the titanium anchors are placed in the jaw. Over the next three to six months, the anchors heal and fuse to the bone, a period known as osseointegration. Small posts are attached to the implant to help provide stability for the replacement tooth. After the anchors heal, the patient is fitted for replacements, which can be installed during the next appointment. Implant surgery at Clock Tower Dental is performed as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia.
A crown can be used to replace one tooth, a bridge can replace several teeth, and a full bridge or full denture can replace all teeth after implants have been placed. The replacement teeth can be treated just like natural teeth and require regular home care and dental visits. Click here to learn more about wearing dentures.
Dental implants are recommended for patients in good general and oral health. A certain amount of bone in the jaw is required to support the implant, so a bone graft procedure may be required before placement. Dental implants can be used for people who have gum disease or problem teeth, currently wear dentures or have bone loss. Most people see successful results from dental implants. Implants are not recommended for children because their jaw bones are not fully developed and can affect the appearance and function of the implant.
